The harrowing tale of Muchanyara, a woman from Bota, Zaka, Masvingo, is one that tugs at the heartstrings and leaves many in sorrow.

She was forced to confront an unimaginable tragedy when a hyena attack at her home left her without both arms. The incident shook the community to its core, forever changing the lives of Muchanyara and her loved ones.

Last year, Muchanyara, her husband Robert Marove (37), and her father-in-law fell victim to a ferocious hyena that had invaded their property while preying on their goats.

The encounter left Muchanyara with a laceration on her thigh, deep cuts on her upper lip and nose, and the unimaginable loss of both her palms.

Robert Marove, her husband, also suffered a deep cut on his stomach and his lower right arm.

In the wake of this horrific incident, a glimmer of hope emerged earlier this year when Stepping into Grace, a non-profit organization, dedicated to supporting amputees, stepped forward to assist Muchanyara.

Through generous donations and funding, she was able to fly to South Africa to receive prosthetics that would help her regain some independence in her daily life.

Muchanyara's niece, Mercy Munodya, shared the bittersweet reality that accompanied the prosthetics.

"The hands have assisted her with some household chores and laundry. However, in the fields, she struggles to hold the hoe, and they are of no use when it comes to eating," Munodya explained.

While the prosthetics have undoubtedly improved Muchanyara's quality of life, it is a constant reminder of the profound changes she has undergone.

Remarkably, Muchanyara's ordeal extends beyond physical challenges. The emotional and psychological toll she endures has gone largely unaddressed, with minimal support provided apart from that of her immediate family.

Munodya expressed her concerns, stating, "She hasn't received any professional psychological help, and from what I observe, she remains deeply traumatized. The counseling she received was solely from family members."

It is crucial to recognize that victims of such traumatic experiences require support and guidance from mental health professionals to help them navigate the long-lasting emotional scars.

Mercy emphasized that her aunt appears visibly distressed and becomes highly uncomfortable when the incident is mentioned.

Her trauma is a poignant reminder of the urgent need for comprehensive counseling services to aid survivors of traumatic incidents.

Amputation, itself, presents an array of multidimensional challenges. It not only affects physical function and sensation but also deeply impacts body image, social interactions, and psychological well-being.

According to Physiopedia 2023, approximately 30% of amputees experience depression, psychological distress, diminished self-esteem, distorted body image, increased dependency, and significant social isolation.

As a mother of five, Muchanyara's amputation has severely hampered her physical capabilities, making it difficult for her to work and provide for her family.

Adding to her struggles, her youngest son is merely one year old, further heightening the challenges she faces daily.

While the community initially rallied around her, offering their support and assistance, it saddens Mercy to reveal that such aid has diminished over time, with many unfulfilled promises made by those who once pledged their support.

"Previously, the community helped her with her youngest son's clothing, diapers, school fees, and even financial contributions. However, the assistance abruptly ceased, and those who offered help have fallen silent. Fortunately, Rufaro recently stepped forward and provided some much-needed funds," Mercy shared, highlighting the sporadic lifeline that keeps hope alive.

Muchanyara's journey is a testament to the indomitable spirit of the human will. Despite enduring unimaginable pain and loss, she perseveres, fighting against the odds every day.

Her story serves as a stark reminder that compassion, support, and professional guidance are vital for survivors of traumatic events to rebuild their lives.

It is essential to shed light on the pressing need to provide support specifically tailored to women who have experienced such traumatic events.

Women, often play multiple roles as caregivers, breadwinners, and pillars of strength within their families and communities and they deserve targeted assistance and resources.

By recognizing the unique challenges faced by women in the aftermath of a tragedy, society can foster an environment that promotes their physical and emotional recovery. Ensuring access to counseling services, financial aid, vocational training, and opportunities for empowerment will empower these resilient women to rebuild their lives and serve as beacons of hope for others facing similar adversities.

It is a collective responsibility to uplift and support these women, reaffirming their worth and enabling them to reclaim their rightful place in society.

However, Munodya further emphasized that providing support for Muchanyara to start her entrepreneurial venture would significantly improve her quality of life.

"If she can receive financial assistance to start a chicken project or open a grocery shop, it would enable her to care for her family independently," Munodya suggested.
